All You Need To Know About Precision Pins and Rollers

Posted: Sep 1, 2021 11:41:14 AM

Precision pins and rollers are the workhorses in machines and manufacturing industry. Pins join, fasten, and hold pieces together. Rollers help parts move, and provide support along the way.

If you’re embarking on a new project that will rely on these key components, you may be wondering what tolerance or material will best suit your needs.

Keep reading for an overview of everything you need to know about precision pins and rollers.

What Are Precision Pins and Precision Rollers

Precision pins and precision rollers are mechanical parts that are cylindrical in shape.

A precision pin is a mechanical fastener that helps to join other, larger pieces together in a machine assembly.

A precision roller fills the same capacity. It helps larger machines do their job. However, in the case of a precision roller, it's usually a machine part or assembly that requires movement.

Precision Pin Uses and Precision Roller Uses

Pins and rollers are used in a wide variety of industries. Wherever heavy machinery is present or large scale manufacturing projects are breaking ground, pins and rollers keep things operating smoothly.

Different types of pins and rollers can be useful for a variety of tasks. In general, you'll see them in use in the automotive industry, electrical industry, and industrial market. They help hold together bigger machines such as CV joints, linear track rollers, and fractional motor shafts. Rollers can also fulfill the role of bearings, helping a heavy load to move by supporting it on its outer diameter.

One of the reasons that pins and rollers are so versatile is because they can be customized to fit various shapes. They can have any of the following end configurations:

  • Square/as ground
  • Radius (tumbled only)
  • Radius (machined/ground)
  • Spherical radius
  • Chamfer
  • Knurl (soft materials only)
  • Drilled Holes

Precision pins and precision rollers can also come in a variety of sizes as well. They can range anywhere from 1-25mm in diameter and 1-100mm in length.

Know The Tolerances

Part of what makes pins and rollers so useful is knowing how much weight they can tolerate. When used as dowel pins or needle rollers, these unsung heroes can support some pretty substantial loads.

When pins and rollers are made out of hard materials, their diameter tolerance can be +/- .0001". With soft materials, the tolerance is +/- .0002".

Length tolerances in pins will depend on the length of the pin, but typically it can be down to +/- .001".

Types of Materials

Pins and rollers come in a variety of materials. Depending on what they're being used for, they can be made out of hard materials like 52100, GCr15, 8620, 62HRC, and 440C.

Some applications, however, may require pins and rollers made out of softer materials. Those materials can be 300 series stainless steel, brass, aluminium, and mild steel.

Pins and rollers can also come in a variety of finishes if corrosion protection and/or aesthetics are important. They can be found as ground, metal-plated, black oxide, and electroless nickel.
